The Hand Splint & Padded Cover is supplied cut ready to be heated in boiling water. It can be used on either the left or right hand.
To Fit
Once heated in boiling water and the plastic is pliable, mould it around the patient’s hand and wrist, or even the therapist’s own hand and wrist. To protect the skin from the heat, put a towel on the hand before moulding the splint to shape. Once the shape is correct, the splint can be quickly cooled by holding it under cold water.
The correctly finished Hand Splint is placed in the padded cover. The covers are designed for either the left or right hand. The thumb flaps are folded to avoid a seam touching the skin between the thumb and first finger.
Two splints are supplied with the cover. We recommend using the thinner splint as this will become pliable in about 20 seconds in boiling water and is easy to mould to shape. If alterations are necessary, parts of the splint can be reheated and remoulded. The thinner splint will allow the wrist to slightly flex and this may be beneficial for some patients. However if a stronger splint is needed, use the thicker splint. The thicker splint will take longer to heat before becoming pliable.
